FRBC Grant

In 2001, Microbial Technology was awarded a Forest Renewal BC grant supporting the in-depth research into the fundamental aspects of the treatment process of Dryland Sort Runoff.

The project includes research in Microbial Technology's laboratory and field work at a variety of Sunshine Coast Dryland Sorts. We are investigating the effect of various wood sources on runoff composition and toxicity. We're also performing our own toxicity tests (Daphnia magna) on raw and treated runoff. Our results confirm our initial findings (with Microtox) that the treatment system detoxifies runoff from a variety of sources.

We have made some 'giant strides' in certain aspects of this problem, and have at least a good part of a solution, in particular for smaller sites and small operators (about 2-3 hectares of paved area or smaller).

This work, originated and funded by Microbial Technology in cooperation with local operators in the forestry industry, is a first of its kind in the world, dealing with a serious and under-researched problem, and was substantially achieved within one year. Efforts are continuing to improve performance and reduce footprint to make it applicable in as wide a range of locations as possible.

Community Involvement

Microbial Technologies sponsors various community activities and initiatives. Staff at Microbial Technologies are active members of The Heart of the Creek Baseball team and participated in the Corporate Outrigger Race Challenge.

Microbial Technologies worked on a volunteer basis with the director of a locally produced movie "Singing the Bones" to translate the promotional material for their world premiere in Montreal into French.

Microbial Technologies, along with Sandfire Scientific, Terra Firma Design, Dawn Cambrin, and Norwest Labs are co sponsors of the Citizen's Water Watch initiative. The concept of this initiative is to publish water test results, from both drinking and ocean water, for the presence of contaminants as a community service. The results are advertised in our local newspaper and on the Water Watch website. Microbial's involvement includes voluntary laboratory services, covering costs of the web site, and advertising fees.
